About By Lelou
Who are you and what is By Lelou?
My name is Ida and I am the person behind By Lelou! I design, print, and sew all the clothes myself in my studio in Segersäng, outside Nynäshamn.
Lelou was my grandmother's nickname. She was an incredibly warm, creative, and handy woman, and one of the people who inspired me to start sewing.
By Lelou is a small, personal brand focusing on sustainable, non-toxic, and play-friendly children's clothing and accessories. Everything is made with care for both children and the planet.
Where are the clothes made?
All clothes are sewn by me in my studio at home in Segersäng. From the first pattern to the last stitch, it's my hands doing the work. This is something I am very proud of.
Why do you only sell in small batches?
I consciously choose to produce in small batches to avoid overproduction and maintain high quality. This means that each garment is carefully considered and that your child will have something very few others do. When a garment is out of stock, it is often gone for good, so grab it if you see something you like!
Can I follow you and see new collections as they're released?
Materials and Sustainability
What materials do you use in your clothes?
I use upcycled or organic fabrics made from natural materials, primarily organic cotton. My jersey garments are sewn from soft single jersey, and bibs are lined with a layer of cotton fleece.
The upcycled fabrics have often been cotton bedding or curtains and have been washed many times.
I choose materials that are comfortable against a child's skin, flexible, and maintain their shape after washing.
What do you mean by the clothes being kind to the planet?
It's about thinking through the entire chain. I choose organic natural materials, produce in small batches to avoid waste, and strive for each garment to last long enough to be passed on to a sibling or friend. Rather fewer and better than many and fast.
Are the clothes organically certified?
This is an important question, and I want to be clear about the actual situation. The fabrics and materials I use are organically certified, but the final product itself, meaning the finished garment, is not certified. This is because such a certification requires a completely different type of production and administration than what is possible for a small, single-person brand like By Lelou.
What I can promise, however, is that I am meticulous about my choices. I use certified organic fabrics in my production, and I am always open about where my materials come from. Honesty and transparency are important aspects of what I do.
What does "recycled fabrics" mean?
I use fabrics from second-hand products, such as bed linen or tablecloths, which I give a second life by repurposing them into new products.
The fabrics I purchase are made of natural materials and are thoroughly washed before I repurpose them.
Sizes and fit
What sizes are available?
I sew clothes in sizes 50 to 116, which is from newborn up to about 6 years. The selection varies depending on what is currently in stock, as everything is made in small batches.
If you would like something sewn or knitted in a larger size, please contact me and I can usually arrange it.
How do I choose the right size for my child?
Sizes follow standard children's sizes based on the child's height. Each product description includes size information to help you choose the right one. You can also check the size chart page. If you are unsure, you are always welcome to contact me, and I will help you!
Do the clothes run large or small?
I aim for a generous and movement-friendly fit so that the child can play freely, but with details such as elastic and cuffs that allow the garments to be used for a long time.
If you are between sizes, it is usually better to go up a size, but this varies a bit between garments.
Do not hesitate to ask if you are unsure.
What if I'm unsure about the size?
Contact me via chat, the contact form or at info@bylelou.se and I will help you find what you're looking for. There's no harm in asking!

Care and washing
What's the best way to wash my clothes?
Most garments are washed at 40 degrees. Always check the washing instructions on the garment to be sure. Please wash with a mild, unscented detergent without unnecessary additives.
Can I tumble dry the clothes?
I recommend avoiding tumble drying to help the garments maintain their shape and durability longer. Hang or lay the garments flat to dry.
Anything else to consider?
Avoid fabric softener, it is good both for the garment's longevity and for the environment.
Dribble bibs should be stretched out a bit after being removed from the machine; this helps them to retain their shape better.
